Letter To My Senators: We Need A Public Option

Dear Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer:

I am an unemployed single father without any health coverage whatsoever. Even before I got laid off I didn’t have coverage, as the insurance plan offered by my employer was too expensive.
If my son or I were to be injured or become sick enough to need medical care, we would be in big trouble. It’s hard enough just to keep food on the table without having to worry about paying for health care.
A public option is key to any meaningful reform of the health care system here in the US. Any so-called reform that passes without it will be powerless in my opinion, and would probably end up being another handout for the powerful insurance and pharmaceutical industries, like that prescription drug plan President Bush was so proud of.
We in the US spend more per capita for health care than any other industrialized nation. A public option would help to lower these costs, in addition to making insurance available for all.
Now I don’t think what I’m asking for is extreme, or socialism, or whatever else the Republicans and the insurance lobbyists are calling it nowadays. I think it’s humane, and I think it makes sound economic sense.
I hope you can implore your colleagues to support a public option.
